As described in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, university scientists working with pig wounds showed that engineered keratinocytes can be transplanted into wounds with a dual purpose of temporarily covering the wound and of delivering growth factors to speed healing.

Complete epithelialization occurred 12 days after transplants of keratinocytes, but not until 16 days in wounds treated only with saline (p < 0.05). ...
