The Davis, Calif., company presented data showing that two bacterial genes engineered into plants result in gene expression and synthesis of the sugar trehalose. The sugar is usually produced in response to stress in a plant's or microbe's environment, such as freezing, heat, or chemicals.
At the Plant Molecular Biology meeting in Amsterdam, the company described introduction of the genes with an Agrobacterium vector co-cultivated into tobacco and potato. The genes coding for the sugar, which consists of two glucose molecules, were cloned from E. coli. ...
