CYTL (San Diego) described a new compound that is designed to stimulate immune responses against tumors. At the International Cancer, Gene Therapy, and Vaccine Conference in Washington, D.C., the company said its peptide directed against the cancer marker MAGE-3 generated a cytotoxic T cell (CTL) response that killed tumor cells in vitro.

MAGE-3 is a protein made by 80 percent of melanomas, 90 percent of small-cell lung cancers, and a smaller percentage of other lung tumors and cancers of the prostate, breast, and colon, the company said.
