CHIR (Emeryville, Calif.) published results from inoculating chimpanzees with the vaccine. Five of seven animals vaccinated showed protection against challenge with the virus.

Slight increases in serum levels of liver enzymes occurred in three of these chimps, but no additional markers of hepatitis appeared, and RT-PCR assays for the viral RNA were negative. These three animals either had reacted to the frequent liver biopsies, or there was a minimal, resolving infection, the company researchers wrote in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. ...
