SCIO's subsidiary, Guilford Pharmaceuticals, published data showing that PARS, a DNA repair enzyme, is activated by nitric oxide (NO), suggesting that brain cell death can be prevented by blocking this NO-induced depletion of the cells' energy resources.

In Science, researchers associated with the subsidiary showed that the compound benzamide and derivatives, which stop the action of PARS (poly (adenosine 5'-diphosphoribose) synthase), blocked cell mortality in rat brain tissue extracts induced by NO and by N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA). ...
