The Emeryville, Calif., company filed a patent infringement lawsuit in federal court in San Francisco, alleging that Advanced ChemTech Inc. (Louisville, Ky.) and SynPep Corp. (Dublin, Calif.) are infringing CHIR patents relating to combinatorial library technology.

U.S. Patent No. 5,182,366 covers the controlled synthesis of peptide libraries using mixed resins, and U.S. Patent No. 5,266,684, owned by the University of California and licensed exclusively by CHIR, covers libraries of 8,000 or more peptides. CHIR sells peptide libraries it claims are protected by some of these patents through its 75 percent-owned subsidiary, Chiron Mimotopes Peptide Systems (San Diego), and its Mimotopes Pty. group (Australia). ...
