Express Scripts terminated a contract with pharmacy Linden Care after the pharmacy benefit manager found that Linden Care “predominately dispensed Horizon prescription drugs.” Express Scripts said it is evaluating “captive pharmacies,” which it defines as companies that derive the vast majority of their prescription volume from one manufacturer or product. Horizon disputed Express Scripts’ claims in a statement, saying “the notion that Linden Care is a so-called ‘captive pharmacy’ of Horizon Pharma is entirely false.” Horizon said less than 5% of its net prescription sales are filled by Linden Care and it does not have an ownership stake in the pharmacy. Horizon called Express Scripts’ strategy “profiteering,” saying the PBM’s ownership of a mail order pharmacy creates a conflict of interest.
