On Dec. 17, 2013, NIH announced six opportunities under the first wave of funding for the Brain Research through Application of Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) initiative. NIH said the first wave of awards, which will be announced in September, will constitute the agency's $40 million investment in BRAIN for fiscal 2014 ending Sept. 30, 2014. Two of the funding announcements call for developing methods for classifying and accessing the diverse cells and circuits of the brain, three focus on developing technologies for recording and modulating cell circuits and one seeks to develop next-generation, non-invasive imaging technologies.
