Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF)

In vitro studies suggest aspirin could help treat demyelinating disorders such as MS. In primary human and mouse astrocytes, aspirin increased levels of myelin-promoting CNTF compared with no treatment. In cultured mouse oligodendrocytes, supernatant from mouse astrocytes treated with aspirin increased levels of myelin-associated proteins and decreased cell death compared with supernatant from Cntf−/− astrocytes. Next steps could include testing the effects of aspirin in animal models for demyelinating disorders.
