Retinal progenitor cell therapy for retinal degeneration

Rat studies suggest transplantation of retinal progenitor cells could help treat or prevent retinal degeneration. In a rat model of retinal degeneration, subretinal injection of expanded human retinal progenitor cells preserved visual acuity, photoreceptor distribution and outer nuclear layer thickness and cell count compared with vehicle control injection. Next steps include clinical testing.
