Disease models

Mouse model of traumatic brain injury (TBI)

A mouse model of TBI could be useful for studying inflammatory mechanisms in the disease and screening for potential treatments. To mimic TBI, mice underwent surgical thinning and compression of the skull. Transcranial imaging of the injury site revealed proinflammatory innate immune activity and apoptosis. Local administration of purinergic receptor antagonists showed that acute inflammation protects against cell death. Next steps include identifying and testing drug candidates that modulate inflammatory response and cell death in the model.
