Obama asks for modest FDA budget bump

The Obama administration's FY16 budget request proposes small increases in appropriations for FDA's medical product review centers, and targets most of the new funds for efforts to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria and to develop a regulatory framework for precision medicine.

The request would boost the budget of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) by $2.4 million, while reducing funds for "targeted, lower priority enforcement activities" by $4 million. CDER would increase spending on antibiotic resistance by $5 million in FY16, with funds earmarked to "support CDER's efforts to streamline clinical trial protocols, continue end point development, develop novel clinical trial designs, and facilitate the establishment of a clinical trial network as a part of the National Strategy for Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria."
