Budget deal boosts FDA, but NIH still below peak

A bipartisan omnibus spending bill unveiled Monday night would restore $1 billion of the $1.6 billion that budget sequestration sliced from NIH's budget. The bill, which is expected to pass both houses of Congress, would give NIH $29.9 billion in FY14, a $1.3 billion decrease from FY10, NIH's largest budget.

The bill sets FDA's FY14 base appropriations at $2.6 billion, up $91 million from the budget enacted for FY13. It also restores $85 million in sequestered user fees, including about $36 million PDUFA funds, according to the Alliance for a Stronger FDA. The budget for FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) would increase by $92 million to $1.3 billion and the budget for the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) would increase by $25 million to $337 million. ...
