Senators ask FDA, CMS to address waste of excess drug

A group of 11 Senators asked FDA Commissioner Robert Califf and acting CMS Administrator Andrew Slavitt to recommend how Congress and the Obama administration might address the cost to taxpayers and patients of drug waste due to mismatches between single-dose vial size and dose.

In a letter to Califf and Slavitt, the lawmakers asked that FDA and CMS investigate the effects on the federal healthcare system and patient access of selling "expensive medicines in one-size-fits-all vials containing more than what the average person needs." ...
