Waxman, Pallone want hearing on health research diversity

Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.) requested that the health subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee hold a hearing to discuss the progress on the inclusion of women and minority groups in health research. In a letter to Reps. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) and Joe Pitts (R-Pa.), Waxman and Pallone noted that there are still health disparities between men and women and that there are "still many conditions that disproportionately affect minority populations," including diabetes and HIV/AIDS. The representatives said the subcommittee needs to hold a hearing to "learn more about why men and women and different minority groups have different incidence and prevalence of certain diseases and conditions."

Upton is chair of the E&C Committee, and Pitts is chair of the E&C's health subcommittee. Waxman is ranking member of the E&C Committee, and Pallone is ranking member of the health subcommittee. ...
