USDA may support biotech segregation

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is considering steps to facilitate and regulate the segregation of biotech crops, Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman announced today. Speaking to USDA's Advisory Committee on Agricultural Biotechnology, Glickman said that in order to protect America's "domestic and foreign markets and ensure public confidence, it's essential that we improve our ability to identify and track genetically modified farm products." He said USDA will publish a notice on Thursday requesting comments on whether the agency should accredit, review or certify identity preservation systems; if it should establish biotech or non-biotech crop definitions; and if it should expand its accreditation of laboratories to detect biotech grains and oilseeds. ...
