FDA approves naloxone autoinjector for opioid overdose

FDA approved Evzio naloxone from Kaleo Inc. (Richmond, Va.) for the emergency treatment of suspected or known opioid overdose. The product is a hand-held autoinjector that provides verbal instructions to rapidly deliver a single dose of naloxone. Kaleo (formerly Intelliject Inc.) said it plans to launch Evzio in the U.S. this summer. Evzio will be available to patients, family members and caregivers through prescription. Naloxone rapidly reverses the effects of opioid overdose, but existing drugs require administration via syringe and are used by trained medical personnel.
