Starlink corn registration cancelled

At the urging of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Aventis (AVE) will cancel the registration of its Starlink Bt corn, a genetically modified corn involved in the recent recall of taco shells by Safeway and Kraft Foods. Cancelation of the registration means the corn can no longer be planted for any agricultural purpose, which the EPA said will ensure no new StarLink corn will find its way into processed foods. However, the EPA contends that it does not have any evidence that food containing StarLink will cause allergic reactions in people, and the agency believes the risks are extremely low.

Last night, Safeway (SWY) recalled taco shells made for the company by Mission Foods (Irving, Texas) following claims by Genetically Engineered Food Alert that taco shells from a Silver Spring, Md. Safeway store contained StarLink corn. Safeway also decided to remove Mission Foods' own brand of taco shells from its shelves. ...
