A diabetes primer

Although Type I and Type II diabetes both result from a rise in blood glucose levels, the two forms of the disease are quite different in terms of origin, progression, patient population and mode of treatment.

The primary diagnostic threshold for diabetes is a fasting glucose level >126 mg/dL, recently lowered from >140 mg/dL. The major measure of the severity of the disease is glycated hemoglobin, or HbA1c, which is 6.2 percent in healthy people and 7-8 percent or greater in diabetics.
