Cardiac arrests are not supposed to happen to healthy 54-year-olds. Mine occurred out of the blue, during an otherwise unremarkable workday in mid-March.

What followed was horrific - 31 days in the cardiac ICU, before being moved to acute rehab and finally discharged another six days later. I had nine separate surgical procedures, several because of common complications along the way. On two occasions, I required emergency defibrillation to restart my heart. My condition was dire and I should have been a goner...
