Who represents the interest of individuals in genomic research?

In the following article, DNA Sciences Inc. takes up BioCentury's invitation to reply to a Commentary published on Aug. 7. BioCentury's policy is to publish responsible alternative commentary from outside contributors. As in all such articles, the opinions are those of the author.

This discussion corrects several key facts that ultimately gave rise to a misleading characterization of our company, DNA Sciences, in the Aug. 7 issue of BioCentury. The Commentary, entitled "Altruism for whom?" ignored the fundamental social issues that are the reason for DNA Sciences' decision to put individuals' wishes and directives at the center of our company's genomic research program...
