At one of President Clinton's town hall meetings last week, a gentleman from Marion Merrell Dow got the president to talk about the breakthrough drugs committee. Here's the question you've always wanted to ask, and the answer, which you may find surprising: Q: I'd like to begin by saying that I applaud your efforts to bring health care to the top of the national agenda. I think that's very important.

Let me say that, at the same time, I'm somewhat concerned about some of the provisions of the bill, particularly some of the provisions that relate to goverment control and intervention in the business. Things like the committee that would discuss the appropriateness of new drug prices. I believe that that's the function of the open market, and I'm very concerned about the implications there...
