Osaka University spinout Quantum Biosystems Inc. has joined the single-molecule sequencing race with a solid-state system that could offer improved development timelines over competing nanopore technologies that use protein components.

The company's technology is based on the work of Masateru Taniguchi, who developed a technology for identifying nucleotides using electric tunneling current, which involves measuring the distinct electron transport properties of individual nucleotides as they cross a nanoscale gap between two electrodes.
