Stakeholders discuss technology's impact on health care

With 10,000 Americans expected to reach the age of 65 every day over the next decade, it is critical to rethink how health care is delivered, C. Martin Harris, chief information officer at the Cleveland Clinic, said during a Tuesday roundtable hosted by the House Energy & Commerce Committee under its 21st Century Cures initiative. Harris said 1.3 million people come through the Cleveland Clinic annually but said mobile technology could cut that number in half by treating people in their homes instead, which would also make for a cheaper price tag.

The roundtable centered on what steps Congress could take to bridge the gap between technology advances in health care and the regulatory policies that govern them. The E&C committee is holding a series of roundtables and hearings under its 21st Century Cures initiative.
