Defining a relevant data model

Despite the decision by Celera Genomics Group that its database service was not viable as a standalone business, Incyte Genomics Inc. and Gene Logic Inc. continue to believe that there is a business in databases that have information that customers can't get out of the public domain.

Last month, Applied Biosystems Group took over marketing of CRA's Celera Discovery System, and the sibling companies indicated that limited efforts would be put into enhancing the proprietary data components of the product(see BioCentury, April 29). Like CRA, INCY has said that it is going to pursue drug discovery and development for its own account. But INCY President Robert Stein said that the focus on drugs would not stop the company from investing in its databases. ...
