EU gags on patents, goes for the corn

Despite the opposition of several member states, the EU Commission last week ended an almost six-year moratorium on GMOs by authorizing the import and marketing of Syngenta International AG's Bt-11 corn for human consumption.

The authorization covers imports of canned or fresh sweet corn. Canned vegetables will have to clearly show on the label that the corn was harvested from a genetically modified plant. An authorization for cultivation of Bt-11 corn is still pending...
