Ingenuity: Drilling for more

To divine the biological significance of results from genomic experiments, researchers face the daunting task of searching a vast published literature for connections between genes of interest and others that have been mapped to pathways. Thanks to high throughput biology, millions of these individual interactions are being revealed, which means that the sheer numbers become overwhelming at the whole genome level.

A business has therefore sprung up to provide search tools to speed the process. Ingenuity Systems Inc. has created a database and ontology of gene and protein interactions and related cell type, tissue and disease information that it says provides structure to the literature. The company's software tool uses algorithms to search the knowledge base and produce theoretical genetic pathways and biological insights based on known gene-gene interactions.
