Researchers with Immerge, a joint venture between Novartis AG (NVS; SWX:NOVN, Basel, Switzerland) and BioTransplant Inc. (BTRN, Charlestown, Mass.), published in Science the generation of 4 PERV-free miniature swine piglets by nuclear transfer cloning that have 1 GGTA1 allele knocked out using the pGalGT gene trap targeting technology. The GGTA1 gene is associated with expression of an antigenic carbohydrate on porcine cells that may lead to transplant rejection. PERV is a virus encoded in the chromosomes of pigs that appears to be able to infect human cells. ...
