The Whitehead Institute received a $35 million grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute to participate in the full-scale effort to sequence the human genome. Along with international collaborators, the genome researchers suggested that a working draft containing 90 percent of the human genome sequence could be available by the spring of 2000, one-and-a-half years earlier than previously expected.
