Monsanto's board approved a plan to spin off the company's chemical businesses, resulting in a life sciences company and a chemical company, both to be publicly held and separately traded.

The businesses that now comprise the life sciences company generated $700 million in operating income on sales of $5.3 billion in 1995. Products of the new life sciences company will include Roundup herbicide; Bollgard insect-protected cotton and Roundup Ready soybeans; NutraSweet brand sweetener; Ambien, a prescription drug for the short-term treatment of insomnia; and Daypro and Arthrotec, two arthritis treatments. ...
