The '831 patent covers methods of modifying Bt gene sequences to make them resemble those of the plants into which they are being inserted. The suit covers insect-resistant cotton and potato products as well as other Monsanto products. Monsanto has begun limited marketing of the potato and plans to market it widely in the fall of 1996. The cotton has limited registration for purposes of plant propagation and probably will be fully registered this year.
