In chimpanzees, a single dose of 250 mg/kg HCV1 given 30 minutes prior to exposure to HCV genotype 1a provided complete protection from viral infection, while single dose of 50 mg/kg HCV1 provided no protection. In a chimpanzee with acute HCV infection, 250 mg/kg HCV1 given 42 days after viral exposure reduced viral load to below the limit of detection for 14 days before the animal rebounded with an HCV1-resistant strain. In 3 chimpanzees with chronic HCV infection, a single dose of 40 mg/kg HCV1 led to undetectable viral load in 1 animal for 21 days before it rebounded with an HCV1-resistant strain and led to 0.5-1 log reductions in viral load in the other 2 animals without evidence of resistance. Data were published in PLoS Pathogens. ...
