Researchers at Stanford University and colleagues reported data from neonatal mice genetically modified to express Elafin in their vascular endothelium showing that the mice were almost completely protected against mechanical ventilator-induced lung inflammation. Specifically, Elafin-expressing mice blocked elastin degradation, transforming growth factor (TGF) beta activation, apoptosis and neutrophil/monocyte influx caused by mechanical ventilation.
