Baylor researchers reported in the latest Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that they have developed two peptides 29 amino acids long, one of which, ChPepz, mimics the active site of alpha-chymotrypsin. The other, TrPepz, mimics the active site of trypsin. The authors said it was the first time that a protein or peptide designed de novo has functioned like a true enzyme, hydrolyzing (cleaving) protein at preselected peptide bonds with a useful rate of catalysis. ...
