Genetic differences in tumors could shed light on disparity in clinical outcomes

Results from a National Cancer Institute study could explain disparities in treatment outcomes for African-Americans, who have the highest lung cancer incidence and mortality rates of any racial group.

The study, published in Clinical Cancer Research in December identified differences in mRNA expression and miRNA expression between lung tumors from African-Americans and European Americans.

“Race and ethnicity is just one factor in precision medicine, but it is important,” study author Brid Ryan told BioCentury. Ryan is an investigator in NIH’s Laboratory of Human Carcinogenesis.

The NCI group compared gene expression signatures in lung tumor and normal tissue samples from 22 African-Americans and 19 European Americans that underwent curative non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) surgery between 1998 and 2014.
