Systemic lupus erythematosus and other autoimmune diseases are usually viewed as disorders of acquired immunity marked by production of autoantibodies. Now, independent German and Swedish teams have found that components of the innate immune response-neutrophils and invariant NK T cells-contribute to SLE in mice and humans.
