Mouse studies suggest inhibiting NOX1 could help treat ulcerative colitis (UC). In a mouse model of ulcerative colitis, NOX1 knockout increased body weight and other markers of physical health and decreased diarrhea, inflammatory cell infiltration into the colon, colonic expression of inflammatory markers, loss of goblet cells and crypts in the colon, colonic edema, erosions and ulcerations compared with normal NOX1 expression.
