Mouse studies suggest inhibiting MCP-1 in bone marrow stromal cells could help treat atherosclerosis. In a mouse model of atherosclerosis, MCP-1 knockout in cells expressing nestin (NES) - a marker for bone marrow stromal cells - decreased size and number of atherosclerotic lesions on the aortic arch and thoracic aorta, the calcified area on the aortic valve, and the number of animals with calcified plaques compared with normal MCP-1 expression.
