Therapeutics: Inhibitor of DNA binding 1 (ID1)

May 14, 2015 7:00 AM UTC

Studies in patients and mice suggest inhibiting ID1 could help treat cancer. In peripheral blood monocytes from patients with metastatic breast cancer or metastatic melanoma, ID1 levels were higher than in monocytes from healthy subjects. In spleens from mouse models of melanoma and mammary cancer, levels of dendritic cells were lower and levels of ID1-expressing myeloid-derived suppressor cells were higher than in the spleens of normal mice. In a mouse model of melanoma, ID1 knockout decreased tumor growth and metastasis compared with normal ID1 expression, whereas ID1 overexpression increased tumor growth and metastasis. Next steps could include developing and testing ID1 inhibitors in cancer models. (See "Check your ID", page 15)...
