Team identifies new role for SORL1 in Alzheimer's disease

In a paper published in The Journal of Experimental Medicine, researchers at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute and colleagues showed that sortilin-related receptor 1 (SORL1; gp250; LR11) attenuates beta amyloid-induced neurodegeneration, suggesting a new target that could help treat Alzheimer's disease.

Mutations in SORL1 were previously identified as a genetic risk factor for AD. In addition, modulation of SORL1 expression has been linked to beta amyloid accumulation, suggesting the protein could help protect against AD pathogenesis, yet the mechanism of neuroprotection was unclear (see BioCentury Extra, Jan. 19, 2007)...
