India, African countries will be first to benefit from Biocon’s cheaper insulin plan

Biocon will start making good on its promise of dime a day insulin for developing countries first in India and Africa, company founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw told BioCentury. Expanding the availability of low-cost insulin to other low-income countries will require the construction of manufacturing facilities closer to those countries and the use of cheaper reusable pens to deliver the insulin, she said.

Mazumdar-Shaw, chairperson and managing director of Biocon Ltd. (NSE:BIOCON; BSE:532523), cited Ethiopia, Nigeria and Kenya as countries that would first benefit from the plan before the initiative is expanded to countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Vietnam and the Philippines...
