Gottlieb farewell speech: 'Take on hard problems and challenge conventional wisdom'

Scott Gottlieb admonished public servants who are afraid to take controversial actions that benefit the public, defended his prolific tweeting and heaped praise on FDA staff in a speech delivered at the agency on his penultimate day as FDA Commissioner.

“No phrase bothered me more than when I heard people say to me they didn’t want to do something important because they wanted to ‘preserve their political capital,’” Gottlieb said. “I was never sure what political capital is. Can you deposit it in your bank account?"
