Report: rebates topped $89 billion in 2016

A study by the Altarum Center for Value in Health Care reports that drug manufacturers passed $89 billion in rebates for brand name drugs in 2016 to U.S. health plans and insurers, reducing total retail drug spending by 21%.

The biggest recipients of rebates were Medicaid with $32 billion and Medicare Part D with $31 billion. Private plans received a total of $23 billion, while the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs received a total of $3 billion...
