U.K. seeking ways to remain in EMA

In a speech Friday outlining her vision for the U.K.'s future after Brexit, Prime Minister Theresa May announced that the country plans to seek ways to remain in the European Medicines Agency.

May said the U.K. will explore terms under which it can establish an associate membership in EMA, which would include abiding by the agency's rules and making a financial contribution. The prime minister said such a membership would support continued investment in innovative medicines in the U.K. and help treatments get to patients faster as companies prioritize larger markets when seeking regulatory approval for their drug candidates. Benefits for the EU include the use of U.K. regulators, who assess "more new medicines than any other member state," and access to the "expertise of the U.K.’s world-leading universities." ...
