Drug development costs unsustainable, Gottlieb warns

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb Monday warned that the increasing cost of drug development is unsustainable and outlined steps FDA will take to reduce the cost and uncertainty associated with creating new drugs. If FDA reduces the cost and uncertainty of drug development, manufacturers should share some of the savings in the form of lower prices, he said.

“We're on an unsustainable path, where the cost of drug development is growing enormously, as well as the costs of new medicines,” Gottlieb said in prepared remarks to the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society. “We need to do something now, to make the entire process less costly and more efficient. Otherwise, we won’t continue to realize the practical benefits of advances in science, in the form of new and better medicines.”...
