U.S. subsidizing global drug R&D, Gottlieb says

At a Senate appropriations hearing on Tuesday, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said the U.S. is "subsidizing" global drug R&D as a result of high drug prices.

During the hearing, Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) highlighted the difference between drug prices in the U.S. and other countries, and suggested that Americans “might be subsidizing other countries for their cheaper prescription drugs.” Gottlieb replied: “I don’t think it is a debatable proposition. We are subsidizing drugs for other countries through the high prices we pay here to support the research and development, and we need to address that too.” He added that he is "trying to do all I can within the context of my agency” to address drug costs...
