NIH grants had worst year in 2013

Budget sequestration, which slashed NIH's budget by 5% ($1.55 billion), made FY2013 ended Sept. 30, 2013, the worst year ever for NIH grantees, according to data released Friday. Only 16.8% of applicants for grants requiring competitive peer review received funding, which was a new low. The rate was 17.6% in FY2012 and 30% in FY2003. The rate for R01 grants, which fund investigator-initiated research projects, was 17.5% in FY2013, also a historic low. ...
