Foundation makes first set of $3M life science prizes

The Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences Foundation announced the first group of 11 phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) and its role in cancer metabolism; and Robert Weinberg, at MIT and the MIT/Ludwig Center for Molecular Oncology, for the characterization of human cancer genes.

Sawyers was scientific co-founder of cancer company Aragon Pharmaceuticals Inc. (San Diego, Calif.), Cantley was scientific co-founder of cancer metabolism play Agios Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Cambridge, Mass.) and Weinberg was co-founder of Verastem Inc. (NASDAQ:VSTM). Shinya Yamanaka, a researcher at Kyoto University and the Gladstone Institutes, also received a prize for his work on induced pluripotent stem cells.
