NAFTA group backs Mexican GMO freeze

Mexican restrictions on planting transgenic corn should be maintained and strengthened, according to the Commission for Environmental Cooperation, an environmental group established under the North American Free Trade Agreement. The CEC said gene flow from transgenic corn poses threats to biodiversity in Mexico, the center of origin for corn. In addition to banning the planting of genetically modified corn pending additional research on the risks and benefits of gene flow, the CEC also suggested that Mexico take steps to minimize imports of live transgenic corn, for example by restricting U.S. imports to milled corn. ...
