Karius raises $50M in series A

Infectious disease diagnostics play Karius Inc. (Redwood City, Calif.) said it raised $50 million in a series A round led by existing investors Data Collective and Lightspeed Venture Partners. New investors Tencent and Khosla Ventures also participated, along with existing investors Innovation Endeavors and Spectrum 28.

Karius launched in 2014 with a $5 million seed financing round led by Data Collective. The company's Digital Culture test detects more than 1,250 bacterial, viral, and other pathogens in a patient's blood sample. The test uses next-generation sequencing combined with machine learning and genomics algorithms to identify cell-free microbial DNA fragments and match them to pathogens, without the need for culture.
